The ISAWARE II (Increasing Safety by enhancing crew situation AWAREness) project is largely based upon information available on-board of aircraft, to pre-process this information, to prioritise and to present the results in visual and oral ways consistent with the natural perception of the crew. The concept developed is an Integrated Situation Awareness System (ISAS). This ISAS concept not only intends to greatly improve the situation awareness of the crew, but also should quicken their reaction and should enhance the situation anticipation such, that potentially dangerous situation will be perceived long before they occur, to be able to avoid them. A smart data sensor fusion logic named ILOS will perform all datahandling.

ISAWAREII functional overview

The results of the preceded 4th framework ISAWARE project have clearly shown that the above addressed goals can be achieved. Nevertheless, in the first project some technologies were missing in order to complete those goals. Therefore, six of these technologies have been highlighted as critical innovations in ISAWARE II:

  • Interactive technologies dedicated to surveillance,
  • Pilot's ability to anticipate terrain, traffic or weather threats along an intended route before activating this route,
  • Crew assistance in the most demanding and human error prone phases of flight (e.g. departure and landing), and in critical situations, for instance in case of a decompression above high elevation terrain,
  • Improved vertical awareness using the vertical display associated to the standard navigation display,
  • The taxi-support function should fit into the current flight procedures,
  • Depiction of (minimum) safety altitudes instead of, or combined with terrain.
